Ha Long Bay – a preferred filming location for international productions.

Renowned for its outstanding natural scenery, Ha Long Bay has long been a preferred filming location for international productions. In addition to Ha Long Bay, Silaa—an action–romance film—will also be shot in several destinations across Viet Nam, including Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Cao Bang, Ninh Binh and Quang Tri.

Previously, Ha Long Bay served as a filming location for major international productions such as Kong: Skull Island (2017), directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, a U.S. national, was appointed Vietnam’s Tourism Ambassador for a three-year term (from March 2017 to March 2020), and the French film Indochine (1991), which later won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

To film the renowned movie Indochine, starring French icon Catherine Deneuve, the French director built a film set on Ha Long Bay, with Vung Oan Island serving as the main location. The crew filmed on site continuously for three months.

Each day, boats transported the film crew from the former Bai Chay ferry terminal to Vung Oan Island for shooting. The French actors stayed at hotels in the Bai Chay area, with Catherine Deneuve residing at Ha Long 1 Hotel, room 208, which was specially redesigned at her request.

According to local residents, the set included both on-island and offshore structures, with houses built on the island and over the water, connected by a bridge. In addition to the main cast, local fishermen and workers were recruited as extras, while more than 100 fishing boats were used for background scenes.

Released in 1992, Indochine won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1993. Following its release, Vung Oan Island became a popular destination for international visitors, particularly French tourists.
