Hon Trong Mai - The symbol of love and pride of Ha Long Bay
Amidst the thousands of majestic limestone islets in Ha Long Bay - a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site - Hon Trong Mai (the Cock and Hen Islets) stands out as an iconic symbol not to be missed on any journey to this natural wonder. With its unique shape and deep symbolic meaning, Cock and Hen Islets has long held a special place in the hearts of visitors. In 2000, it was officially chosen as the symbol of Ha Long tourism, and more broadly, as a representative image of Vietnamese tourism featured in numerous domestic and international publications.
Cock and Hen Islets consists of two small islets, each about 12 meters high, standing face to face and resembling a pair of roosters and hens. Set against the poetic natural backdrop, the two "chickens" appear to be affectionately leaning toward one another, lost in a timeless moment of love. Shaped by millions of years of natural weathering, Cock and Hen Islets still stands tall amidst the waves – a testament to enduring, loyal love that transcends both time and space.
Beyond its symbolic and aesthetic appeal, Cock and Hen Islets is also evidence of a unique geological process. It showcases the effects of sea erosion and tidal forces on limestone over millennia. During low tide, visitors can clearly observe the marks of erosion at the base of the islets, carved by the sea and waves through the ages.
Come visit and explore the breathtaking beauty of Ha Long Bay!
