The working Group of Inter-sectoral United Nations evaluated damage that caused by Typhoon YAGI to Ha Long Bay

Within the framework of the International Strategy for Natural Disaster Reduction of the United Nations General Assembly, on November 10th, 2024, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam coordinated with the UNESCO Office in Hanoi to organize an Inter-sectoral Assessment Team, including ICOMOS risk assessment and management experts, representatives of the Department of Cultural Heritage, and UNESCO Office in Hanoi, to carry out a program to assess and verify the level of impact and damage that caused by Typhoon Yagi to world heritage sites and nominated heritage sites in Quang Ninh province, including Ha Long Bay. Mr. Pham Dinh Huynh, Deputy Director of Ha Long Bay Management Department, represented the Department's Leadership to welcome and work with the Delegation.

At the working program, Mr. Pham Dinh Huynh - Deputy Director of the Department briefly reported to the working Group on the developments of typhoon  Yagi, the impacts and severe damage of the typhoon in Ha Long Bay, as well as the attention and direction of Quang Ninh province and the efforts of Ha Long Bay Management Department in overcoming the consequences and damage that caused by the typhoon; At the same time, the Ha Long Bay Management Department proposed that the working Group calls for funding sources to support the Department to promptly overcome all the damage caused by the typhoon in order to effectively respond to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change on Ha Long Bay.

Madam Veronica Casanovas Gonzales, Expert on Disaster Risk Management and Heritage Conservation - ICOMOS organization, noted the impacts and extent of damage caused by Typhoon Yagi on Ha Long Bay and will coordinate with the UNESCO Office in Hanoi to complete the Report, send it to the United Nations General Assembly to call for funding for Ha Long Bay as requested.
